Most CD-ROMS are capable of supporting DMA mode, but the default in XP is still PIO. Setting it to DMA won’t make your CD-ROM faster, but it will consume less CPU cycles. In order to improve your IDE Harddisk performance which supports DMA access, do it as follows,
1. Right Click on “My Computer” on the Desktop and Select “manage“.
2. In the Computer management windows, Select the “Device Manager” under the “System Tools“.
3. Now Navigate to “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers” and expand it.
4. Double Click on “Primary IDE Channel“.
5. Under the “Advanced Settings” tab, If transfer mode is set to PIO Then set it to “DMA if available“.
6. Repeat the step for the “Secondary IDE Channel” if You have devices attached to it.
7. Reboot the sytem to the changes to take effect.
